Back in the old times, it was hard to find a wife/husband. You were most likely related to your entire village. If you wanted to find a wife, your best bet was the next village over. But not everyone had canoe or raft. There were no roads and no cars. Travel by foot took a long time. And you just don't go into someone else's village. A person could get killed for that if shell money was not exchanged between the families within the next couple of days. Wars started this way. Men from a village would sneak to another village and kidnap a woman. Usually a beautiful woman who was hard to get. She would then be taken back to the village to the men's house and tied up. Each man would try her out to see if they wanted her for his wife. She would then "own" the men's house and would cook and serve the men. If any man wanted her, he would then take her as his wife.
